The history of the caves of Frasassi is a history made of water and erosion. A millennia old history with water shaping the rocks inch by inch creating one of the most fascinating wonders of nature, with a unique display of stalagmites and stalactites.
The history of the caves of Frasassi is a great history recently written by speleologists and explorers. The caves were in fact discovered with in the city limits of Gengo (Ancona) on June 28th 1948 with the discovery of the entrance of Grotta del Fiume. From then on new discoveries followed day by day, and 20 years later the Grotta del Vento was found, without any doubt the most impressive and moving. With the last discovery they realized that it was impossible not to show to the public such a natural wonder. Therefore, since January 1st 1974 the caves have been open to the public thanks to the institution of Consorzio Frasassi. From then on every year thousands of visitors have seen the caves and even now this once in a life time experience is available to the public.
