It is not only a republic, not only a small country. San Marino, which dominated Romagna from 700 meters high, is not only a Republic or a small country, but it is recognized as a symbol of freedom and independence. It is in fact the most ancient and the smallest republic of the world, which has been able to preserve its independence and values for 17 centuries, resisting through the passing of time and continuous wars, ambitious lords and tyrannical popes. This is the reason why the white and blue flag of San Marino is a direct synonym of freedom and independence. Seventeen centuries of history have made the small republic on the top of mount Titano unique and simply stunning. The historic center concentrates in a few steps a myriad of palaces, castles, museums, and churches held within the very ancient city's walls. The Public Palace and the basilica aren't to be missed and of course the three famous castles (or towers) that dominate the entire territory. Outside the city center the Republic shows off its more modern side with its wide lanes and many shopping centers.
